You watch a sad, romantic movie and you find yourself in tears. Someone cuts you off as you drive to work in the morning and you arrive seething with rage. Your boss is demanding you finish that 10 page report tonight, or else. You reach for a cigarette or drink to settle yourself down; you deserve it after all that you have to put up with. Surely just one more chocolate bar won't do any harm, after all your feeling low on energy and you need the sugar fix?
Never, ever, underestimate the power of your emotions!
People are a mass of emotions, which are running riot most of the time, largely unacknowledged and ignored. Yet they are controlling our thoughts and our actions and influencing our mental and physical health. As you look around you, you will notice that most of the problems you see are the symptoms of suppressed emotions. Depression, anxiety, stress, fears/phobias, road rage, violent outbursts, alcohol and drug addictions, food and sexual addictions, physical ailments and so the list goes on. For far too long, the focus has been on the symptoms of our suppressed emotions; depression, dis-ease, sickness, pain, struggling and suffering. You can participate in your own mental, physical and emotional well-being and subsequent healing. Firstly you need to acknowledge your emotions. There are no good or bad emotions, they are just emotions and they are there for a reason, to give you a message and suggested course of action for your life. You need to go into the emotion and explore what you are feeling, understand where it is coming from and discover what it is trying to tell you and then you will be able to release it.
Often if the emotion is excessive and you have over-reacted to something then it means that there is a deeper underlying emotion that has not been expressed and needs to be dealt with. You may have unexpressed emotions from past hurts, childhood events, difficult relationships, work related issues, traumas, etc. that are simmering away inside, that you may be unaware of or think that you have already dealt with. There is quite a big difference between intellectually dealing with something and emotionally dealing with something and for many people this can be quite confusing. Telling yourself you're over it and it's in the past doesn't mean that it is not effecting how you react to situations in your life today. Once you become aware of these unresolved emotions you can set about eliminating them and the huge impact they are having on your mental, emotional and physical health, your relationships with others and your peace of mind.
In the past these suppressed emotions would have taken years of therapy to resolve, but not any-more.
